refractive surgery co-management
Refractive surgery refers to a procedure when the eye is surgically
altered to eliminate or greatly reduce a person’s dependence on
glasses or contacts.
Worldwide, one procedure, LASIK, has come to be used the vast
majority of the time. With LASIK the central area of the cornea
is reshaped with a cool laser beam after the epithelium has been
lifted. Then the flap is replaced and vision is quickly restored.
As all technology quickly changes, there have been recent improvements
in this area.
Burrows Vision Clinic has been providing LASIK
co-management for over 8 years; evaluating and consulting with
patients and their suitability for LASIK.
Other refractive procedures such as Intacs
are used to a lesser extent mainly due to the fact they are only
successful with a much smaller percentage of patients.
INTACS
These are small clear prescription inserts placed in the peripheral
cornea. These inserts reshape the corneal curvature to correct
nearsightedness. There is no corneal tissue removed and the
central portion of the cornea is untouched. They can be removed
or replaced if your prescription changes. Intacs will not
correct as large a refractive error as LASIK.
