punctual occlusion
Punctal occlusion is a treatment for patients with
dry eyes
or tear chemistry
problems due to lack of tear volume.
Patients suffering from dry eyes that are not responsive to tear
supplements such as drops and/or ointments often times get relief if
the drainage openings (puncta) in the lid are closed. This is
accomplished by gently inserting a small silicone plug into the puncta
so more volume of tear fluid is retained on the surface of the eye.
The plugs can be easily removed at a later date if necessary.
The cost of this treatment is reimbursable by Medicare and Major
Medical Insurance.
