corneal molding
Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) is useful in patients who don't
desire surgical refractive procedures and are otherwise good
candidates.
Due to the availability of advanced contact lens materials and the
ability of lenses to be computer designed, this new modality has
proven successful in reducing
nearsightedness
(myopia). The
lenses are worn during sleep. The back surface curvature of the
contact lenses reshapes the central portion of the cornea.
Improvement in vision begins in the first few days of wear so that
the eye will see clearly during the day without lens wear.
After the maximum improvement is achieved the patient wears a
retainer lens only during sleep on a schedule that is determined for
each patient. If desired, contact lens wear can be discontinued
and vision will revert back to its original status.
This procedure can be very helpful in children who are rapidly
becoming more nearsighted so that the progression can be stopped or
significantly slowed.
